jason gets on a boat that is destined for manhattan
this one was a bit all over the place. one of the problems was the lack of focus. its clear that the big thing about this film is jason being in manhattan – the problem, though, is that it takes him a whole hour to get there! this could’ve worked quite nicely, whetting the audience’s appetite before jason wreaks havoc in manhattan but they mess it up a bit.
there is zero tension. that feeling of “oh dear, they’re all going to die. do they know? can they escape? will some of them find out he’s there?” etc, etc. but here the killing was just empty. this is clearly because the people who made this were too focused on the manhattan part that they didn’t really put much effort into the bit on the boat. there was a sense of just waiting till you got to manhattan and watching it i could feel that sense of waiting.
this wouldn’t have been such a big fuck up had the boat bit just been a little intro to the main event, but, as i said, it tool them far to long to reach it!
and then, when they finally get there they’re like kids in a candy store. not those kids that go mental and have fun and grab everything and try to eat it all at once – no, they were like those ones who were thinking about it a bit too much, starting thinking of a gameplan, then thought of another, then went back to the first one, then decided a gameplan and finally ended up trying to cover all their bases and failing to covering any of them.
there were some nice bits when we see jason in that famous street with the big tvs and when he gets into the subway but otherwise its not that great. its very unfocused and they can’t decide if they want jason to terrorise manhattan or chase they last survivors from the boat journey. also, the moments out in the open are very, very short and too much of the time is spent in alleyways and sewers, and so instead of it feeling like jason was in manhattan it just felt like jason was any-old-where.
like with parts 4-7 there is an attempt to develop a bit of a subplot, but in this installment the subplot takes a backseat to the illspent attention that was given to the manhattan idea. the concluding sequence was pretty cool, though, and a little different from the other films, so that was nice.
kane hodder was pretty cool as the superpowered jason, and there were a few nice moments, but overall this isn’t one of the best in the series.
cast:
kane hodder is jason again
No comment.
I can’t even watch the ads for this type of movie.
Funny how when we were teens, my sisters and I would hunker down under some warm blankets late at night in the basement rec.room trying to scare ourselves silly on “fright night” TV
One I still remember… a house that tried to kill everyone in it. The walls moved, the canopy over a bed came down to crush someone, I think blood ran freely. Scared me half to death.
